The Cinque Terre is a coastal area within Liguria, in the northwest of Italy. It lies in the west of La Spezia Province, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Route already in Roman times, the pass is important because it connects the Cinque Terre and the hinterland of La Spezia with the Genoese Tigullio.
However, a real road connection was opened only in 1823, on the initiative of Carlo Felice, thus ending the centuries-old isolation of the province of La Spezia towards Genoa. The Aurelia car is thus completed.
In the immediate post-war period, the passage of the pass was made insecure by gangs of criminals.
Now is one of most scenic appennino pass to be climbed by bicycle when in Liguria region.
