Day 1: from Palermo to Corleone

Bicycle touring in Sicily, cycling from Palermo to Corleone with our road bike rental

My first day touring saw me start in Palermo, and head mostly south towards Corleone. As you can see from the elevation profile, the climbing started almost immediately and continued to reach a peak about 25km before dropping down a bit into my overnight stop in Corleone. 

My summary for the day was: 

Distance: 84 km 
Elevation Gain: 1,442 metres 
Elevation Loss: 951 metres 

Day 1: from Palermo to Corleone

The day started by picking up my Bianchi touring bike provided in Palermo from Veloce. 

The affiliate bike rental shop in Palermo took great care of me in making sure I had everything I needed for my 2-week journey. 

I checked out of the B&B Dietro il Politeama, leaving behind excess luggage with Alessandro. 

I had previously made arrangements to do this, and booked another night there upon my return in 2 weeks. It was a relief to not have to carry excess gear while on my bike. It was late morning by the time I departed Palermo, with interesting times working my through the busy city streets before finally hitting the lesser travelled outskirts. 

What a beautiful sunny day ahead as I worked my way to Corleone, with a brief stop to visit the brilliant mosaics of the Cattedrale di Monreale. My route from Monreale to Corleone could have been a bit more direct, but I missed a couple of turns. Not to worry, as it allowed me to enjoy more of the peaceful country roads – quite a relief after the hustle and bustle of the busy city. The only downside was running out of water in the heat of the mid-afternoon, and nothing open by the time I reached the small paese of Santa Cristina Gela. 

Fortunately, the local carabinieri (police) were quite helpful and gave me an escort to a small roadside bar in Piana degli Albanese. It was about 3km off my route to Corleone, but who was I to argue with the authorities! The rest of my day was less eventful, and I arrived in Corleone around 6pm. I had booked my B&B the night before via email to Antonino Gariffo at Al Capriccio, and also enjoyed a bountiful dinner at his attached restaurant

Giro of Sicily by Enzo - Prologue: Palermo.

Arrival in Palermo on overnight train from Roma 

My first day in Sicilia started out with an overnight train trip from Rome – a great bargain at 60€, sharing a triple sleeper. 

My roommates were a couple of nice, young fellows who seemed to be impressed for my plans to cycle around Sicilia for 2 weeks. Or, maybe they were just humouring me :)

The early-morning ferry crossing to Messina was invigorating as I had my hot brioche and espresso on the top deck at sunrise. 

It was such a beautiful sunny day in Palermo, and I walked a couple of km to my B&B – B&B Dietro il Politeama. I was greeted warmly there by the owner, Alessandro. He was like a personal tour guide, and provided many suggestions for sites to visit and food to eat.

Spent the rest of the day wandering through downtown Palermo in the warm Sicilian spring sun – could not ask for a better way to start my little Giro. 

At Alessandro’s recommendation, dinner was at a small family-run restaurant – Trattoria Altri Tempi.

Aka Giro d’Enzo II – May 2014

Introduction

This is a story of my 13-day bicycle circumnavigation of Sicilia in May 2014, starting and finishing in Palermo. 

In between, were many ups/downs, beautiful coastlines, wonderful food, and even more wonderful people and experiences.

This was my second cycling trip to Italy. 
The previous year I was up a bit further north, covering about 800 km starting in Riccione and heading inland to my parent’s birthplace in Abruzzo, before heading back to the Adriatic and returning on the coastal route to Riccione. Before returning home to Vancouver, I also spent a few days in the Dolomites. 

That is where I met Jerry de Concilio, when I signed up for a 1-day tour that included watching a stage of the Giro d’Italia with Veloce Bike Rental. 

I would keep in contact with afterwards, and arrange a touring bike rental for this 2-week trip around Sicilia.

Since my ride around Sicilia was my second cycle tour in Italy, I referred to it as Giro d’Enzo II. I can’t wait until the third edition in the Dolomites later in 2015.

What follows is a day-to-day brief summary of my experiences, with some photos and statistics for each stage.
